  Larnach Castle is New Zealand's only castle, nestled on the Otago Peninsula, only 12 kilometers from the center of Dunedin city, and stands as one of the country's premier tourist attractions. In 1871, the business magnate and politician William Larnach built the castle for his beloved first wife Eliza. It took 200 workmen three years to complete the shell of the castle, and a further 12 years for master European craftsmen to complete the lavish interiors. Mr. Larnach spared no expense for his dream castle, selecting only the finest materials from around the world.
