FAQ about the project

For safety reasons, the minimum age for the Mount John Observatory stargazing tour is 7 years old.
Due to the changing sunset times throughout the year, the stargazing sessions may vary from day to day.
The meeting point is at the Dark Sky Project ticket office at 1 Motuariki Lane, Lake Tekapo, next to the town's only supermarket, Four Square.
The tour is usually cancelled only in case of rain, strong winds, or dangerous icy roads in winter. You will receive a full refund at that time.
If it is only cloudy, the tour can still go. When you report to the Earth & Sky office, we will update you on the latest weather conditions, and if there are more clouds, you will be able to choose whether to go up the mountain before departure. If you choose to go up the mountain with us, depending on the cloud cover, if there are parts of the sky that are clear, we will try to stargaze with the naked eye and telescope first, and then take you to visit the professional large-scale astronomical equipment, and have the opportunity to visit the largest astronomical telescope in New Zealand (we cannot visit it on clear nights because researchers use them all night). We will then use professional software to display virtual starry skies, astronomical knowledge and stories, as well as some wonderful astronomical photography and time-lapse animations. At the same time, if the clouds suddenly disperse while we are on the mountain, we will switch to outdoor stargazing at any time. If you prefer to see a sky full of stars, we can help you rebook to another date with vacancies for free or you can choose to cancel when you report to the office (there will be a small cancellation fee for each order)
